Make Perfect Cuts With Mitre Boxes - ToolsRUs
When cutting wood for frames or moulding, mitre boxes are a vital, hand-operated alternative to an electric mitre saw. Simple yet ingenious, a mitre box is not really a box at all. It is more like a tray with a bottom and two sides. Because a mitre box will take a beating from a saw, you can opt to purchase a type designed to withstand the rough treatment a little more. You can even build you own mitre box and save a little money.
Basically, a mitre box allows you to cut boards at precisely 90 or 45 degrees, sometimes other angles as well. Whether you are building a picture frame or installing baseboards or moulding, precision angles are important. Mitre boxes are designed to hold a board securely in place while you make a cut with a hand saw. The saw remains at the precise angle of the cut while cutting thanks to slots cut into the vertical sides of the box.
A horizontal piece of wood or hard plastic is the base piece of a mitre box. Attached to both long ends of the base are vertically oriented sides. Thus, both the ends and top are open. In profile, a mitre box looks like a square-edged “C”. Slots are cut into both side boards. A common mitre box features three slots on each side. On both sides there is a perpendicular slot at 90 degrees to the long edge of the side and two 45-degree slots, one facing to the left and one to the right. The 45-degree angle slots in the side closest to you when making a cut are closer together than their respective slots in the far side. This design allows a saw to move freely through both sides when making 45-degree cuts.
Some products Brick and Mortar Hammer, Screwdrivers, Double Flex Wrenches
Mitre boxes may be wood, moulded plastic or cast aluminium. Metal and plastic boxes will last longer than wood owing to the sawing which can eventually damage the wood box. A wood box may feature metal runners or guides to increase its lifespan. A backsaw is most commonly used to cut wood in a mitre box.
These days, a lot of woodworkers use an electric mitre saw instead of a mitre box and backsaw. Hand-powered mitre boxes, however, will always be useful.
Transmission Pan Installation.?
I'm planing on changing my transmission fluid and filter on my 97 Buick Le sabre. This my first attempt at doing this. The fluid has 106000 miles on it. I have the torque setting for the bolts (13lb/ft). My question is when reinstalling the pan are there any tricks of the trade to insure that I am getting the pan seated right. Or is there any specific staggered pattern for tightening the bolts down to specs to insure that after the job is done I'm not going have transmission fluid dripping. I just want to get this right the first time. And is there any truth to the myth that after changing the transmission fluid the tranny could start slipping ?
Thanks in advance for any help !!
Sometime around that year GM implemented a reusable transmission pan gasket that is far superior in construction to the wadded up piece of crap you will get from the parts store.
A lot of people throw away this gasket and use the wimpy one that comes in the filter kit from the parts store and then complain of leaks.
My advice if your car is equipped with the thick heavy reusable gasket, look it over clean it and reuse it. If you see any abnormalities in it buy a new one from a GM dealer.
Changing fluid in your car is good for it.
A BAD TRANSMISSION will often operate better with old ATF in it because it is thicker and can more easily apply clutch packs. When fluid is changed in a BAD TRANSMISSION, it now has thinner oil that blows past the harden clutch piston seals. This is why people think this is the case.
Part of making your transmission last involves keeping the fluid changed in it. ATF when new contains additives that protect the rubber seals inside your transmission - over time these additives break down allowing the seals to harden causing internal leaks which in turn cause partial apply of clutches, which leads to clutch pack burn out.
