How do I drill a screw through wood without damaging the wood?

I am in the final steps of setting up a chair. A screw must go through one of the wooden legs in order to support part of the chair. What tools would I need and what steps would I have to go through in order to do this without damaging the wood?

A pilot hole before you screw is a must if you don't want to split the wood.
However if you are also after the ability to countersink or hide the screw head you will need to drill a hole larger than the screw head a few millimeters deep to take the screw head below the surface.
