What kind of horsepower gains would a msd ignition have on a 96 camaro v6?
I just got my 96 camaro v6 as my first car. the previous owner had put on a magnaflow muffler (just the muffler and tips) and a k&n filter. what kind of gains might a msd ignition give on a car with this setup. please dont just say "buy a lt1 camaro" or something like that in volving a different car or engine. 99% of insurance companies will not write a policy for a person with less that 5 years driving experience at all, even if they could pay the 10K per month rate. stock the v6 makes 200hp. what do you think these mods might make on this engine (muffler, filter, msd)? maybe 10hp?
The ignition box will not give you more than maybe 2-3 hp here and there on the rev range of your engine. The box reduces misfires, but a well tuned stock ignition system works quite well on an otherwise stock engine with bolt-ons.
In short, until you go more hardcore, don't bother.
As for your other mods, the muffler won't do much, since the stock crimp bent pipes and cat are the real restrictions. The K&N filter is good for about 5 hp, but really only in the higher rpm range, possibly less with the stock box and intake plumbing.
The 3800 V6 is a great base engine to make mods with, and you can easily bring this engine to over 300hp with just some basic mods - and more if you save up for a blower - but you need to do a bit more than just bolt-ons to get it to really move. I have an LT1 - and I'm not going to tell you to buy one, because you have a good starting point, maybe not to make amazing amounts of giddyap, but enough to make a good, reasonably fast driver.
