Styles of Horse Bridles
Like saddles, horse bridles are one of the pieces of equipment necessary for domesticated horses, but there variations. Horse Bridles Bridles used in dressage competition require a skilled handler, while others are geared to the horse's comfort.
The types of equestrian bridles of concern here are the double bridle, the bitless bridle and the comfort bridle. For formal competition, double bridles are typically used, but they are also called dressage bridles.
In order to direct the animal, a horse bridle is used. Horse Saddles A headstall and reins are the main components of a bridle. The piece that goes into the horse's mouth is the bit which is a part of the headstall. Of course, with bitless bridles, that is not always the case.
Dressage bridles make use of two bits instead of one. Weymouth bridles are another name for them. In a double - or dressage bridle, the two bits are called the snaffle and the curb. They are known as the bradoon and the Weymouth in dressage circles. Two sets of reins are required to control a double bridle, one for each bit. Double bridles are usually found only in dressage competition, saddle seat riding and other formal events because they require a lot of skill to use.
A bridle that has no bit is called, appropriately, the bitless bridle. horse nutrition A type of bitless bridle is called the hackamore, and rather than a bit, it relies upon pressure points on the horse's face to direct the animal. It uses a nosepiece - a strap of leather that fastens over the snout - instead of a bit. The reins pull on either side to steer the animal. Requiring a different touch, bitless bridles are common in endurance and trail riding.
The comfort bridle is designed to make the wearing of a bridle more pleasant for the horse. Comfort bridles have extra padding on the nosepiece, around the ears, and on the back of the chin. To ease the discomfort to the horse from pulling on the reins, comfort bridles are usually made from very soft leather in addition to the abovementioned features.
