Examine These Items If Your Engine Will Not Crank
I remember years ago a customer of mine called because she was stranded at the mall. She couldn't get her car engine to turn over. Attending to her vehicle's problem was fortunately simple enough as I was quite nearby then. The battery terminals were not attached properly. Though sometimes they do loosen over time yet these are simple to attach properly. That was exactly what had happened in this case. If your engine will not turn over at all, the problem probably lies with the battery quite frequently. Loose or corroded battery terminals cause many cars to be towed to auto repair shops every year. If the car engine doesn't crank over at all, the first thing to check is the battery and terminal connections. Here's a quick auto repair tip, turn the lights on and try the horn. This will be a quick test to see if your battery has any power left in it. If there's no horn and no lights, try wiggling the battery connections. I leave the lights on while trying this so I can tell if I'm making a better connection when moving the battery terminals.
A load test with a battery tester is the next step after checking the connections at the battery. When a battery turns an engine over slowly, it's a warning sign that the battery may be failing, and it should be tested. Regrettably, batteries will give out sometimes with no warning whatsoever. Temperature changes can sometimes reveal a problem with a battery that otherwise may go unnoticed. Significant changes in temperature will effect the ability of a car to start. Batteries will need to have a good charge before they can be properly tested. Modern battery testers can accurately gauge the charge of the battery.
Alternators that can't deliver an adequate charge can cause a raft of problems with the car. It's always a good idea to check the alternator to make sure the output is within the manufacturer's specifications. Engine starters may have an open circuit or use an inordinate amount of amperage. Once you are sure a good battery is installed, you need to check the 12v cable that comes from the battery and connects to the starter. Then check at the starter solenoid To see if it is getting power when the ignition is turned to the start position. If power is going to the starter solenoid but the starter is not engaging, more than likely the starter has an open circuit or is binding. The starter may have to be tapped with a hammer to get the engine to turn over. This is just a temporary fix to enable you to get your vehicle to a repair shop. I've used this technique many times to avoid having to tow the car. You can test your starter to see if it is putting too much strain on the battery. This happens if the started drags or binds, which puts too much strain on a battery. The amp draw is measured with a battery and electrical system tester to see if it is excessive.
Is it better for your car engine to use super unleaded petrol?
I find I get a tiny amount extra mpg when I use super unleaded petrol but is it actually good for your car engine? If so, how (not too technical, please!).
some super and premium gas has some extra additives for your injection system but really regular has all you need. unless your car calls for premium you shouldn't need a higher octane, the octane level is just the anti knock rating in a sense and is really only necessary for a car that requires it. there is probably little to no advantage in it for a car that does not require it.
